Lord Abergavenny, Knight of the Garter, was born in 1826 in Longford, Shropshire. He was the 1st Marquess of Abergavenny and the 19th Baron and 5th Earl of Abergavenny. William was also the second titular earl of Lewes. William was baptised in Longford, Shropshire, on 5 October 1826.[1]
In 1848 William married Caroline, daughter of Sir J Vanden-Bempde-Johnstone, 2nd baronet.
William gained the rank of Lieutenant in 1849 in the service of the 2nd Life Guards. He is recorded on the 1851 Census (along with his wife Caroline) as staying with his aunt, Charlotte Fenton Scott, in Knaresborough, Yorkshire. It is not clear, however, whose aunt Charlotte actually was. William's occupation was "NSO".[2]
He was a captain of the West Kent yeomanry (1850-1853) and honory colonel from 1875.
William had a Doctor of Laws and served as a Justice of the Peace for Kent and Sussex.
In 1890 William was said to be residing at 34 Dover Street London and Eridge Castle, Tunbridge Wells. He was also a member of the Carlton Club.
William was Lord Lieutenant of Sussex from 1892 until 1905 [3]
William is recorded on the 1901 census as widowed and staying with his son, Henry Nevill, in Frant, Sussex.[4]
