Biography

Sybil Ranney was born July 29, 1765 in Granville, Massachusetts.[1][2] She was the daughter of Elijah Ranney of Blandford, Massachusetts and his wife Mary Cook. [3][4]

According to Crane, Ellery Bicknell, in his book Genealogy of the Crane Family, published by Charles Hamilton Press in1895, her name was spelled Sibbel in Springfield, Massachusetts.[4]

Marriage

Sybil was married to Jonathan Crane who was a private in the 5th Company, Captain Thomas Knowlton of Ashford, 3rd Regiment and served in and about Boston. [4]

Moved west

Ellery Bicknell Crane further states that Sybil received an inheritance of land in Blandford from her father's estate on January 26, 1797. She and her husband, Jonathan Crane, sold it to Noah Warren of Blandford, for $100.00. [4]About the same time, they removed to Chenango County, New York where Jonathan kept a hotel. [4]

  1. Sylvester, born August 2, 1785 in Blandford, Massachusetts [4]He married a woman named "Sally." Their children were Nelson, Eliza, Lorinda, and Nancy L. Sylvester died May 21, 1847.[5]
  2. Ebenezer, born July 27, 1787, in Blandford, Massachusetts [4]He married (1) Hannah Geer and (2) a woman named "Fanny." Child: Charles G. Ebenezer died September 25, 1867.[5]
  3. Sally, born 1789 or 1790, in Blandford, Massachusetts [4] She married George Wales. Children: Sally, Almerin, Lawrence, Frederick, Ebenezer, Charles, Jonathan, George, Richmond, Smith. Sally died February 9, 1832 at Plymouth, Chenango, New York.
  4. Mary or Polly, born October 19, 1792, in Blandford, Massachusetts [4]She married James Swain. Mary died May 14, 1882 at Toledo, Lucas County, Ohio.[5]
  5. Abigail, born April 8, 1794, in Blandford, Massachusetts [4]She married (1) Elisha Ransom and (2) Richard Crandall in 1817. Children: Nancy Ransom, Hiram, Eliza and Bethania Crandall.[5]
  6. Martha (Patty), born August 12, 1797 [4]She married Solomon Burrell Aldrich. Martha died August 24, 1881 and is buried at Warsaw Cemetery, Warsaw, Rice, Minnesota.[5]
  7. Roxana, born 1798, in Chenango County, New York [4]
  8. Rhoda, born 1799, in Chenango County, New York; died in infancy. [4]
  9. Jonathan, born June 18, 1801, in Plymouth, Chenango County, New York; died May, 1835. [4]He married Susan Liley Wales. Children: Ira, Charles, Smith, Antoinette, Lyman, Francis, James, Mary. He died December 4, 1848 at Oriskany Falls, Oneida County, New York.[5]
  10. Sybil Ann, born 1803, in Plymouth, Chenango County, New York; died May, 1835. [4]
  11. Rachel, born June 4, 1805, at Plymouth, Chenango County, New York. [4]She married George Wales. Children: Almira, Elisha, William. Rachel died January 20, 1870 at Como, Walworth County, Wisconsin.

Death

Sybil died in 1842. [5] There is a notation on the Find A Grave memorial that states that her grave was obliterated.[5]

Census of pensioners in Cortland Co in 1840 Sibbel Crain, living in the west half of Cortlandville with William Goodell. Pension Claim W 23882. Military Record of Jonathon Crain, a pensioner of Chenango Co., N.Y. In May, 1777, he enlisted as a private for 3 years, in Capt. Niles Clift's Co., Col. Samuel Willis Regt., Brigidier Person's Brigade of the Conn. Line. He continued to serve in said company, regiment and brigade until May 1780 when he was honorably discharged. Jonathon Crain died April 13, 1820. According to Records of M. Louise Schouton ? ? (uncertain of two words) Rev. Soldiers of Cortland County and A DAR member.
