Biography

Ebenezer Field was a son of Samuel Field and Sarah Gilbert, born in Hatfield, Massachusetts, on March 17, 1688. ^[1] The birth on that date of Ebenezer, son of Samuell and Sarah Feild (later transcript gives names as Saml and Sarah Field), is recorded in the town records of Hatfield, Massachusetts.^[2][3]

He settled around 1710 in Deerfield. He married Elizabeth Arms, daughter of William and Joanna (Hawks) Arms in 1714. In 1717 Ebenezer removed to Northfield where he worked as a blacksmith and gunsmith. Family tradition has that Ebenezer was shot while pitching peas into his barn by a guard who mistook him for a raiding Indian. There being no surgeon in Northfield, Ebenezer was taken to Deerfield for treatment, but he died before his wounds could be treated. ^[4]

The death of Ebenezer Field, "head of family", on 12 September 1723 is recorded in the vital records of the town of Deerfield, Massachusetts.^[5]

He died intestate. The estate of Eben Field late of Northfield entered probate in about 1725 and was finally settled in February 1737/8.^[6]

Conflicting birth dates of 1686^[7] and 1688^[8][9]. His gravestone (Find A Grave: Memorial #39103295) shows year of death likely 1723 and aged 37, which would indicate a birth year of 1686, but that conflicts with the birth date of sibling Zechariah Field, born 29 August 1685. This may be a conflict of birth and christening dates.
