Notes

Joel Estes & Family were pioneers of Andrew Co., Mo. He engaged in farming and stock raising. In the year 1849 he caught the contagious "gold fever" leaving his family in MO. He headed to California. They struck a mine out of which they realized $30,000. Thirty days later they sold the mine for $500,000.

Joel Estes, his wife, Patsey and 6 of his unmarried children (he had eleven) moved to Colorado and landed at what was then Auraria. He took up some government land about 22 miles north of Denver (near Plattville) where he esstablished a stock ranch and did some propecting in the mountains for gold. He took with him his five negro slaves who had been in the Estes family for a number of years.

Sara & Mary Jane Estes were the first two unmarried women in Colorado. Joel drove the first heard of cattle across the plains into Colorado. In September Mr. Estes moved to the site that is now Golden.

Estes Park was discovered by Joel on Oct 1, 1859 when he and his son, Milton, were out on a hunting and exploring trip and traveled to the head of the Little Thompson Creek. He exclaimed at this little paradise, "this is the very place I have been seeking, here we will make our home." He lived there several years, until he was forced by health reasons to a warmer climate and lower altitude.

Joel Estes was born on March 25, 1806 in Kentucky. He married Patsey Martha Stollings on November 12, 1826. She was born in West Virginia on July 6, 1806 and died August 6, 1882. Joel died in 1875 in New Mexico. Martha moved to Iowa after Joel's death.

Joel's father was Peter Estes born in Virginia December 6, 1775. He was buried in a country cemetery near Amazonia, Mo.

Looks like this is the matching WikiTree profile for her father, Jacob Stallings: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Stallings-200

Though on WikiTree it lists his wife as Ann Smith married about 1778 and in Family Search his wife is listed as Margaret married about 1771 and Sarah Ann Cooper married on 12 October 1798 - though most of the children listed on Family Search as belonging to that couple have birth dates starting in 1775.

So more research needed.

Her paternal grandmother is already in WikiTree: Elizabeth Griffin, https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Griffith-7325

Though in Family Search it looks like she is listed as the wife of Issac Stallings, Joseph Stallings and Kent Stallings .

So there is further research required to clear this up. Seems off hand looking at the dates that the match with Issac Stallings makes the most sense as they are both listed as being born in 1703 and being married in 1723. Though the birth of their first child is listed as 1735 which would not really match up with that marriage date. Definitely more research required.
