According to a diary written in 1881 by his great-grandson David Dolan Weddle, Joseph Weddle lived and died in "Hollen," a town or village in Germany. He was the father of John Weddle.
The diary claims that his children included John, Susan (who married Polser Rouse), George, Daniel, and Joseph.
Research Notes
The actual German spelling of his name may have been Josef Wedel.
Elizabeth Mueting, who published a detailed family history of this family, interpreted "Hollen" to refer to the province of Holland in the Dutch Republic, based on family stories recounted to her by her grandfather Thompson Smith Weddle. While Mueting's conclusion may be correct, it is more likely that the family stories passed down to her grandfather confused "Holland" the Dutch province with "Hollen" a village in Germany. The WikiTree automatic place name search engine returns multiple locations in Germany for a village called "Hollen" that likely were in existence in the early 18th Century, including locations in Lower Saxony (where a current town called Hollen still exists, see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hollen), as well as alternative possibilities in North Rhine-Westfalia (see https://www.mindat.org/feature-2900601.html) and in Bavaria (see https://mapcarta.com/18146892). Further research to identify a Josef Wedel living in the early 18th Century in any of these areas is needed.
