Biography

U.S. Southern Colonies Project logo
Hannah (Wise) Rogers was a Virginia colonist.

Hannah Scarborough West was the 6th and youngest child of John (Johannis) Wise Jr., and his wife Mathilda (Scarborough) Wise. She was born in 1707 at her parents' plantation "Liberty Hall," in Marionsville (not Martinsville), Northampton Co., on Virginia's Eastern Shore. Her family also owned significant acreage in neighboring Accomack County, notably along Nandua Creek on the Chesapeake Bay. Her maternal grandfather was Captain Edmund Scarborough (aka Scarburgh), the first Burgess (representative to Virginia's legislative Assembly) from the "Eastern Shore" and an important military commander in the colony in the 17th Century. Her father was the scion of a notable gentry family from Devonshire, in southwestern England.

When she was 17 or 22 (genealogies vary on her wedding date: 1725 or 1730), Hannah married a neighboring planter's son, Daniel Rogers, whose plantation was on Nandua Creek, Accomack Co., Virginia. They lived there and had 5 children:

  1. Zorobabel Rogers b: 1730 in Accomack, Virginia
  2. John Rogers b: 1738 in Accomack, Virginia
  3. James Rogers b: ca. 1740
  4. Elizabeth Wise Rogers b: Jan 1744 in Accomack, Virginia
  5. Thomas W Rogers b: 1746
Daniel Rogers' Will was dated October 12, 1751; probate was March 31, 1752. He left land "where I now live on this side of a little branch" [of Nandau Creek] to son James, and 12 1/2 acres on Cedar Island to son John. Son Zerobable received land on the west side of the branch and Thomas to receive 12 1/2 acres on Cedar Island. His sons were all under age.[1]

Daniel Rogers died in March 1752 in Accomack County, Virginia. His wife survived him and died in 1759 at her father's plantation (inherited by her oldest brother, John): "Liberty Hall," Marionville, Northampton Co., Virginia. It was just 15 miles south of Nandua.
