Biography

This profile is part of the Stanley Name Study.

Lucretia Standley was born in Weston, Massachusetts, on January 22, 1762, the daughter of Ichabod and Submit Standley.[1] The Standly family moved to Princeton, Massachusetts, a few years later.[2]

Her intentions to marry Lanson Lyon were recorded in Princeton on October 4, 1789. Lucretia's sister Sophia Standley recorded intentions to marry Lanson's brother Seth Lyon on that same day.[3][4] "Lanson" appears to have been a nickname for Alanson Lyon.[5]

In the record of the 1790 United States Census in the town of Princeton, Massachusetts, the households headed by the husbands of the three Stand)ey sisters are listed adjacent to one another. Alanson Lyon's household contained one free white male over 16 (Alanson) and one free white female (presumably Lucretia). Seth Lyon's household contained one free white males over 16 (Seth), one free white female (presumably Sophia), and one free white male under 16 (presumably their infant son Freeman), Thomas Wyman's household consisted of one free white male over 16 (Thomas) and two free white females (Sally presumably was one of these; the other may have been a female relative, possibly her mother, Submit Stanley).[6]

There is no record of children being born to Lucretia and her husband. However, some genealogical websites indicate that Alanson and Lucretia had a son, Ichabod Standley Lyon, born in 1790 in Princeton, Massachusetts. It is said that he married Jerusha Bradish and they had nine children.[7] Ichabod S. Lyon was recorded in the 1840 U.S. Census as living in Naples, Ontario County, New York. The household included a male age 50 to 59 (consistent with birth in 1790), a female age 40 to 49, a male 20 to 29, and five persons under age 20.[8]

The Vital Records of Princeton, Massachusetts, record the death of "Mrs. Lyon" on November 12, 1792.[9] Since the only men named Lyon who are recorded as being resident in Princeton at that time are Alanson (Lanson) and Seth Lyon, it is reasonable to conclude that Lucretia was the "Mrs. Lyon" who died on that date.

Standly-7 and Stanley-4029 appear to represent the same person because: Same person. I'm unsure about the appropriate LNAB. The first records I had for this family were spelled "Standley" and "Standly," but there's a lot of information under the spelling "Stanley."
