Bella (Breznik) Zanitsky migrated from Russian Empire to United States.
Bella was probably born between 1870 and 1876 (see Research Notes), probably in Lithuania, then part of the Russian Empire. Her parents were Sam Bresnick and Edith (Kohen) Breznik.[1]
Bella married Kasriel Zanitsky (see Research Notes), probably in 1890 or 1891 (see Research Notes) and they had at least eight children (see Research Notes).
Bella probably immigrated to the United States between 1890 and 1892 (see Research Notes) and both became naturalized United States citizens in 1914.[2]
In 1900, Kazriel (shown as Kassel, age 28) and Bella (incorrectly shown as Fanny, age 28) lived at 37 Rutger Street in Manhattan, New York, New York, United States with children Rebecca (shown as Becky, age 8), Celia (age 7), Rose (shown as Rosie, age 5), and Samuel (age 3) . A boarder Annie Good (age 30) also lived with the family. Kazriel was a knee pants operator and Annie was a skirts finisher. Although the record includes four children and also shows that Bella is mother of four children, all living, apparently there was a fifth child, the oldest, named Fannie, who is not included in this census record.[3]
In 1905, Kasriel (shown as Kasrial, age 35) and Bella (age 34) lived at 95 Henry Street in Manhattan, New York, New York, United States with children Fannie (age 13), Rose (age 11), Becky (shown as Rebecca, age 9), Sam (age 7), and Isidor (shown as Israel, age 2). A lodger Rosa Falleson (age 27) also lived with the family. Kasriel was a pants operator and Rosa was a cook.[4]
In 1910, Kasriel (shown as Kessler, age 38) and Bella (age 40) lived at 325 E 10th Street in Manhattan, New York, New York, United States with children Fannie (age 18), Rose (shown as Rosie, age 17), Becky (shown as Rebecca, age 14), Samuel (age 13), Isidor (shown as Issie, age 6), and Harry (age 3). A boarder Sam Stein (age 19) also lived with the family. Kasriel was a pants operator, Fannie and Rose were operators in a ladies' shop, and Sam Stein was a knee pants operator.[5]
In 1920, Kasriel (shown as Kessler, age 37) and Bella (age 37) lived at 221 South 3rd Street in Brooklyn, Kings, New York, United States with children Samuel (age 21), Isidor (age 15), and Harry (age 12) and Sol (shown as Sal, age 6). Beatrice (age 19) is also shown as a daughter, however she was either a boarder with her last name incorrectly shown or Rebecca with her first name incorrectly shown. Kasriel was a tailor in a factory, Samuel was a "special at BRT, and Isidor was a clerk in a clothing office.[2]
In 1930, the family's last name was shown as Zanit. Kasriel (age 58) and Bella (shown as Belle, age 58) paid $50 per month rent for their apartment at 32 Bay 23rd Steet in Brooklyn, Kings, New York, United States. They lived there with children Harry (age 22) and Sol (age 16). Kasriel was a fur nailer, Harry was a car starter, and Sol was a screen door mechanic.[6]
Bella was living at 2006 Benson Avenue in Brooklyn, Kings, New York, United States when she died May 20, 1938 in Brooklyn, Kings, New York, United States.[1]
She was buried in the Beth David Cemetery in Elmont, Nassau, New York, United States.[7]
Research Notes
Birth
Bella's birth date varies, as shown in different records:
about 1883 in 1920 census[2] (clearly incorrect, based on children's birth dates)
Last Name
Earlier records show Kasriel's last name as Zanitsky, however Bella's last name is shown as Zanit when she signed a medical examiner's record related to her stepmother's death in 1929[8]
and in the 1930 census.[6]
Very strangely, Bella's death certificate shows her last name as Zanitsky, although it is shown as Zanit in an index compiled from New York City death records by the Italian Genealogy Group.[1]It is believed that the legal last name remained Zanitsky, although the family seemed to Americanize it to Zanit for common usage, probably starting in the late 1920's.
Marriage Date
The year Bella and Kasriel were married varies in different records:
Celia Zanitsky, born about February 1899, died April 1, 1900 in Manhattan, New York, New York, United States
Israel Zanitsky, born December 30, 1902 in Manhattan, New York, New York, United States
Harry (Zanitsky) Zanit, born July 28, 1907 in Brooklyn, Kings, New York, United States, died February 7, 1957 in Brooklyn, Kings, New York, United States
Sol (Zanitsky) Zanit, born September 29, 1911 in New York, United States, died December 1967
