John, born in 1802, was the youngest son of Robert Hamilton and Mary Herkimer. He and his step-brother Robert founded the Queenston Steamboat Company in 1825. In the 1850s he was the main proprietor of the Canadian Lake and River Line. He also dabbled in banking, land speculation and a railway. His political career spanned over fifty years until his death in 1882.
He married Frances Pasia Macpherson and they had eleven children.
