Biography

Lewis was born in 1835. Son of William Vance and Chloe Robbins.

In 1850 he was 14 and living with parents and siblings in Missouri. [1]

He married (1) Rebecca Martin on 19 Jan 1860. She was born in Gentry, County, Missouri on 16 Mar 1836. She died 12 Oct 1874.

In 1860 he and Rebecca were both 24 and living in Missouri. [2]

In 1870 they were living with three young children (Sedate, Lizzie, Claude) in Missouri. [3]

He married (2) Elizabeth Jane Judd on 14 Jul 1878 (1849-1936). She was born in Kentucky in Feb 1847.

In 1880 he was living with second wife, Elizabeth, and two of his children (Melissa and Claude) from first wife in Missouri. [4]

In 1900 he was living with second wife and four children from this marriage (Fannie, Grover, Roland, Ordie) in Missouri. [5]

In 1910 he was 74 and living with second wife, Elizabeth, and two teen-aged children from this marriage (Rolan and Ordie). [6]

He passed in 1919.

Buried in Stafford Cemetery, New Hampton, Missouri. [7]

Lewis and Elizabeth's son Robert Roland Ambrose Vance died in 1946 in California. [8]

  • Downey-1809: Italics text is from my mother's records. Some of the children's names are different so not sure which is correct, this, or what I found in census records above. Farmer and carpenter, section 2 post Office New Castle, was born in Clay County, Missouri, October 10, 1835. His father, William Vance, was a Kentuckian by birth, and his mother, formerly Chloe I. Robbins, a native of Massachusetts. They had a family of ten children , L. F. being the fifth child., In 1844 he came to Gentry County, having for a short time lived in Clinton County. He was reared to his present occupation, which he has ever continued to follow. Mr. Vance has been twice married. First, .January 19, 1860, to Miss Rebecca Martin, who was born in Gentry, County, Missouri, March 16, 1836. She died October 12, 1874. By this marriage he has two children living, Velissa A. and Claudie J. Mr. V. was married the second time, July 14, 1878, to Miss Elizabeth, Judd, was born in Kentucky, in February, 1847. They have one child, Chloe F.
