Leoluca Sabella is born 7 August 1881 in Corleone and baptized the next day. He is the son of Francesco Sabella (spelled “Sabbella” in this record) and Lucia Coniglio. His godparents are Bernardo Sabella and Lucia Jovino, possibly Sabella-24 and his future sister-in-law, Jovino-4.[1] His father's first cousin Bernardo Sabella is a brother-in-law of the first documented mafioso in Corleone, Luca Patti.

Lucia’s sister, Biagia marries Michaelangelo Gennaro in 1884, and Lucia marries Giovanni Cammarata in 1892; both men are members of the Mafia in Corleone.

Leoluca emigrates on the Vincenzo Florio, arriving in New Orleans on 5 May 1905. Soon after his arrival, Luke and another man from Corleone are involved in a shooting in Los Angeles.

It is reported that Faro Amato and Luke Sabella, both Italians, are shot by three African Americans on Enterprise St., in the Italian quarter of Los Angeles, on 17 April. Amato is badly wounded and will die. Sabella shot in the right arm, will recover. The Italians were leaving a friend’s house in Sacramento St., and were at corner of Enterprise and Wilson, in front of the Catholic church, when their assailants stepped out from behind a growth of large castor beans. Robbery was not evidently the motive of the shooting. Sabella reportedly did not see the assailants. The violence is believed to be the result of a race war between "negroes" and Italians in the colony in the neighborhood where the shooting occurred. Police intimate that the Black Hand is involved.[2][3] Faro Amato is the father of Frank "Big Dick" Amato, a Morello gangster.

Leoluca marries the daughter of a fruit dealer from Trabia. Although this record spells her surname "Sanzera," the most common spelling in other records for her family spell it "Sunseri" and her mother's surname "Butera."

Leoluca Sabella, age 25 (b. 1882), born in Italy, single, white American, son of Francesco Sabella and Lucia Coniglio, marries Josephine Sanzera, age 17 (b. 1890), born in Italy, single, white, daughter of Nicola Sanzera and Vincenza Bodera, on 14 April 1907 in Los Angeles, Los Angeles, CA.[4][5]
