William was born on 24 August 1853. He was the son of Sarah Symons and an unrecorded father.[1][2]
In 1861 he was living in Bath Road, on the edge of the nearby parish of Broadclyst, with his grandmother Elizabeth Colsworthy (nee Ching, formerly Stone and Symons) and her husband William Colsworthy. [3][4]
On 15 October 1868, aged 15, William volunteered for the Navy. His record describes him as 5 ft and half an inch in height, with dark brown hair, hazel eyes, and a fresh complexion. He was assigned to HMS Impregnable as a 'Boy, Second Class'. [5] HMS Impregnable was a training establishment started at Devonport in 1862.[6]
