John was born was born at Parson's Park Farmhouse in St Neot, Liskeard, Cornwall, England in late 1875, and baptised on 1 January 1876 in St. Neot, Cornwall.[1] He was the son of James Chapman and Isabella (Wilton) Chapman.
In 1881 John (age about 4) was living in Farm House, Parsons Park, St Neot, Cornwall, England.[1]
In 1891, John was living with his parents at Trethewey, St Neot, at school, age 13. Farmer Son.
In 1901 John (age about 24) was living in Trethewey, St Neot Part of, St Neot Part of, Cornwall, England.
He had emigrated to Canada, then to Spokane, Washington State, USA where he was a cemetery labourer. He returned to Cornwall in November 1911 to marry Sarah Elizabeth Lawry on either Christmas or Boxing Day[2] (records vary, but a wedding on Christmas day is unlikely) and was returning to USA on the Titanic with his wife.[1] He held a second class ticket.[3]
John and Sarah died on 15 April 1912 when the Titanic sank. Sarah had the option of taking a lifeboat but refused when she realised that John would be left behind. John's body was recovered, and he was buried in Fairview Lawn Cemetery, Halifax, Nova Scotia on 10 May 1912.[1]
