Biography

Childhood, New Brunswick

Mary Smart, sixth eldest of the eleven children of William Smart and Ann Brockway, was born in early 1838 in Pleasant Ridge, Saint Patrick Parish, Charlotte County, New Brunswick.[2] New Brunswick was at the time a British Colony, and it remained so until 1867, becoming that year one of Canada's four founding provinces.[3] As for Pleasant Ridge, a tiny, rural community along the New Brunswick's Magaguadavic River,[4] it was part of Saint Patrick Parish until 1856, when Dumbarton Parish was formed from Saint Patrick's northern half.[5]

Mary's five elder siblings were her brother, Nathan, who was born in 1825,[7] her sister, Agnes, who was born in 1828,[8] her sister, Jane, who was born in 1830,[9] her brother, Reuben, who was born in 1832,[10] and her sister, Abigail, who was born in 1835.[11] She also had five younger siblings: her sister, Sarah, who was born in 1839,[12] her brother, John, who was born in 1842,[13] her sister, Margaret, who was born in about 1845,[14] her brother, William, who was born in about 1847,[15] and her brother, Charles, who was born in 1855.[16]

Sibling Marriages, Emigrations

The age differences among Mary and her siblings was considerable. In 1847, the likely year her brother, William, was born, her eldest brother, Nathan, emigrated to the United States. [7] Nathan settled in Oshkosh, Wisconsin,[7]a place that would eventually draw other of her brothers, too. Also beginning in 1847, Mary's three eldest siblings married. Her sister, Agnes, wed George Wooden in 1847 and by 1851 emigrated to the United States, settling in Bath, Sagadahoc County, Maine, on the Atlantic coast, about 300 miles southwest of Pleasant Ridge.[8] Her brother, Nathan, returned to New Brunswick in 1848 to wed Rebecca Pratt in 1848, and they likely immediately returned to the United States to settle in Oshkosh.[7] Finally, in 1850, Mary's sister, Jane, wed Thomas Steen.[9]

Jane and her husband, Thomas, remained in New Brunswick. In 1851, however, Jane continued to reside in the "frame house" of her parents in Pleasant Ridge, with 13 year-old Mary and their other siblings, Reuben, Abigail, Sarah, John, Margaret and William.[18] Residing in their home was also her paternal uncle, James Smart, and a girl named Sarah Gill (age 1).[18]

Marriage, Children

While residing in Bath, Sagadahoc County, Maine, United States, Mary married, in Bath, Alexander Dunbar, 16 Dec 1854.[19] Together, they had ten children.[20] They had a son, George, in April or May of 1856,[21] followed by a daughter, Annie, in Feb or Mar of 1860.[22] As of 7 Jul 1860, Mary and Alexander resided with their children, George and Carrie, in Bath, where Alexander worked as a carpenter.[23] A few doors down resided the family of Mary's sister, Agnes.[8]. In the second year of the American Civil War, Mary and Alexander lost their son, George, in Bath, 8 Mar 1862, at age 5.[21] They thereafter had in Bath their third and fourth known children, Gilbert, who was born in about 1863,[24] and Mary, who was born in about 1867.[25] As of 22 Jun 1870, they resided with their three children, Annie, Gilbert and Mary, in Bath, where Alexander worked as a ship carpenter.[26]

They had more children in Bath in the 1870s: a daughter, Lizzie, in about 1871,[27] a daughter, Sarah, in 1874,[28] a son, Ralph, 2 May 1876,[29] and a son, Walter, born in Mar 1878.[30]

As of 10 Jun 1880, they resided with six of their children, Annie, Mary, Lizzie, Ralph, Sarah and Walter, on Somerset Street in Bath, where Alexander continued to work as a ship carpenter.[31] Alexander contracted liver disease around this time,[32] and this may help explain why their daughter, Mary, also appears in the Bath home of Mary's sister, Agnes, as of 14 Jun 1880, as an "adopted child,"[33] and why their son, Gilbert, who was alive, isn't shown at all.[24]

Deaths, Daughter's Marriage

In Bath, 20 Feb 1882, Mary's husband, Alexander succombed to liver disease, at age 56.[32] Seven days later, her son Gilbert died in Bath of consumption, at age 19.[24] Less than two months later, also in Bath, her daughter Annie married Charles E. Robinson, 24 Apr 1882.[22]

Years as Widow

5 Cummings Street in Bath[34]
In 1883, Mary, newly a widow, lived on Cummings Street, in Bath.[35] Her recently-married daughter, Annie, resided on High Street.[36] Her married sister, Agnes (Smart) Woodin,[8] resided on Washington Street.[37]

Mary continued to make her home at 5 Cummings Street in Bath in 1900, sharing it with her unmarried adult children Lizzie, Sarah, Ralph and Walter.[38] Mary's daughter, Annie, year resided with her husband and their three surviving children, Gilbert, Louise and Hazel, at 1321 Washington Street in Bath, Annie's husband working as a wheelwright.[39] As for Mary's daughter, Mary, she in 1900 worked as a dress maker and continued to resided with Mary's sister, Agnes, on Washington Street in Bath.[40]

Two more of Mary's children married in Bath in the first half decade of the new century, and Mary's sister, Agnes, died. Mary's daughter Sarah wed 38 year-old James D. Tabor, 7 Feb 1901,[28] and her son Ralph married Bertha M. Lakin, 28 Jan 1904.[29] Mary's sister, Agnes, died of heart disease in Bath, 12 Dec 1905, at age 77.[8]

Mary remained in Bath in 1910, continuing to share her home at 5 Cummings Street with her unmarried adult children Lizzie and Walter.[41] In 1910, Annie and Charles remained at 1321 Washington Street in Bath with their daughters, Louise and Hazel, Charles by then working as a "liquor agent" for a "city agency," and Louise as an "apprentice" to a nurse.[42]

Death

In Bath, 22 Jan 1912, Mary died of "acute bronchitis," at age 73.[43] She's buried in Bath's Maple Grove Cemetery.[43] Mary was survived by six of her ten children (listed in order of their deaths): Ralph, who died of pneumonia in Bath, 22 Oct 1934, at age 58 (no children);[29] Mary, who died between 1940 and 1950 (no children);[25] Lizzie, who likewise died between 1940 and 1950 (no children);[27] Annie, who reportedly died in Bath, 28 Dec 1941, at age 83 (four children);[22] Walter, who died sometime after 1950 (no children);[30] and Sarah, who died in Bath in 1964 at about age 90 (one child).[28]

  2. Sources: (1) Mary's 1912 Death Record (citation): "Mary B. Dunbar," daughter of "William Stuart" ("lumberman," born in "Scotland") and "Annie Brockway" (born in "D over NH"), was born in "Pleasant Ridge, N.B." Given her date of death (22 Jan 1912) and age at death (73 years, 8 months), this translates (using an online calculator here) to a birth date range of 1838-01-22 to 1938-05-22. Note: The identification of her father as "William Stuart" is a clear error as the only person by that name living in New Brunswick at the time was Irish, married to a "Catherine" and had a daughter married who was born in about 1848, not 1838.
