Disputed Origins

Unity is frequently conflated with an older sister, name unknown but frequently called "Ursula" who was the wife of Robert Blackwell and the mother of two sons, Robert and James.

Biography

Unity Croshaw was born about 1640, the daughter of Joseph Croshaw and his first wife, whose name is unknown. It is believed that she was the grandchild of Raleigh Croshaw, one of the founders of Jamestown. She first appears in records as the wife of John West. In 1664. Joseph Croshaw deeded his land at "Poplar Neck" and enslaved people to John West, "it being for and in Satisfaction of his Daughter's portion than wife of said West."[1] The 1667 will of Joseph Croshaw also named son-in-law John West. [2]

The Jennings records also include a statement that Unity and John "lived asunder" in 1685.

In 1693 Unity relinquished her dower rights to "Poplar Neck," the property deeded to John West in 1664 by her father. [3] Her death date is unknown.

Research Notes

An unsourced comment on a previous version of her sister's profile states that she was christened in 1636 and married John West in 1654.

She may be a signer of a 1696 petition of the residents of Pamunkey Neck to become a county. [4]

According to King William Records, Mrs. Unity (Croshaw) West was living as late as June 20, 1707, for on that date the Feoffees of Delaware Town, King William County, conveyed to Madam Unity West, of King William County, Lot 46 in the said town. [citation needed]

There is no documentation that Elizabeth Yeardley was married to anyone. I don't know how she got attached to Joseph Croshaw.

Elizabeth Yeardley was married to Richard West. Where is the source saying that Elizabeth Yeardley is the mother of Unity Croshaw?

Where are sources for marriage and divorce? John West and Unity were married about 1660, years after Cockacoeske’s son was born. There is no documentation which actually proves that Maj. John West was the father.
