Ralph was a Freemason, Prince Hall Affiliated
Ralph David Abernathy Sr. was an American civil rights activist and Baptist minister. He collaborated with Martin Luther King to create the Montgomery Improvement Association which led to the Montgomery bus boycott. He also co-founded and was an executive board member of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC). He also served as an advisory committee member of the Congress on Racial Equality (CORE).
During World War II, he enlisted in the United States Army, and rose to the rank of Platoon Sergeant before being discharged.
enrolled at Alabama State University using the benefits from the G.I. Bill, which he earned with his service.
The son of William and Lou Ivery (Bell) Abernathy, he married Juanita Odessa Jones on 31 August 1945 in Alabama.[1]
