Biography

Elisha was born in 1784 in Hartford, Connecticut. He was the son of Gideon Benjamin and Amy Spencer. He married Mabel Hurlbert before 1768.[1] He passed away around 1830. [2]

In 1812, Elisha Benjamin became the first Woodbury, VT representative to the state legislature. [3] "Elisha Benjamin was one of Woodbury's earliest pioneers. He came from Marshfield, Vermont and settled on the center lot of the town, in a log cabin, where he cleared his woodland farm of 100 acres. He was a man of influence and integrity; was the fist representative of Woodbury, and held other town offices." [4]

A marriage certificate for Elisha Benjamin and Joanna Thayer exists dated December 26, 1813 issued in Calais, Vermont signed by "Samuel Perry, Justice of the Peace". No other information was provided on the marriage certificate and no record I have found recording the birth or death of Joanna Thayer. [5]

George Curtis Benjamin (1868-1942) George Curtis Benjamin, the great-grandson of Elisha Benjamin, maintained his great-grandfather was buried with his wife (Mabel or Joanna?) "over the stone wall near the Benjamin Barn" in the family cemetery on Hollister Hill in Marshfield, Vermont. There is no trace of this cemetery.

Hey Ralph! I think one of the problems with both father and son is that there seems to be another man going by the name of Elisha Benjamin in Vermont at the time. Take a look at the records on FS for that name in Vermont and you'll understand. An Elisha Benjamin had several children in another town with another woman. Well, unless Elisha was a bad boy and had two wives in two separate towns! So before we add info to the profiles we need to verify what records refer to this particular person. It's a bit of a puzzle!
Just saw your note. You wrote "Take a look at the records on FS for that name in Vermont and you'll understand." What is FS? I hate to admit I don't know!
