Georges Jean Laurent was born 28 Jan 1730 at Saint-Andeux (St-Andéol), Bourgogne (today within the canton of Semur-en-Auxois, Côte-d'Or), France. [1] [2] [3] [4]
Georges was a soldier and surgeon with France's Troupes de la Marine (cie. de St-Vincent), and was sent to Québec, Nouvelle-France by 1751. [1] [2] [3]
At age 22, on 23 Oct 1752, Georges married Marie Jeanne Griau, age 18, at Québec (Notre-Dame). [1] [2] [3] [4]
Marie Jeanne's father Jacques Gruault (Griau) dit Larivière had also been a soldier with the Troupes de la Marine. [5]
Following their marriage in 1752, Marie Jeanne and Georges had at least six children together from 1753 to 1760, including a first infant who died after birth, followed by five boys. [6]
Georges and family lived through the French and Indian War (beginning in 1754), which was the North American theatre of Europe's Seven Years' War among France, Great Britain and their conflicting allies - but referred to in Québec as La Guerre de la Conquête - following which their homeland was ceded to Great Britain. [7] [8]
Sadly Marie Jeanne Griau died very early (at the age of 26), in the Spring of 1761 (after most of the conflict in North America had ended but before the treaty of 1763). Her death left Georges with five young boys. [2]
A year and a half following Marie Jeanne's death, Georges remarried to Marie Rose Turcot at Sainte-Famille on the Île d'Orléans, 25 Oct 1762; and they later had several additional children. [2] [4]
Georges lived to be 73 years old, dying on 21 Feb 1803, and was buried two days later at L'Ange-Gardien, which by that time had become part of the Province of Lower Canada, British North America. [1] [4]
