Jean Garceau dit Tranchemontagne was the son of Pierre Garceau and Jacquette Soulard, of the parish of Saint-René, diocese of Poitiers, Poitou (today Vienne), France.[1]. He was born in 1675.[citation needed]

Jean was a soldier in the Chacornacle company,[1] King Williams war in 1690. [citation needed] " Jean dit Tranchemontagne, son of Pierre Garceau and Jacquette Soulard of Poitiers, France, was serving in the company of troupes de la marine under M. de Villieu in Fort St.-Joseph at Nashouat, on Rivière St.-Jean, in 1696. [2]

He married Marie Levron on 20 November 1703 in Port Royal, Acadia, while a soldier in the company of Chacornacle at Port-Royal. His parents names and location (Remé in France) were given.[3][4][5]

They had three known children:[1]

  1. Pierre-Jean Garceau dit Boutin, b. 1704
  2. Daniel Garceau, b. 1707
  3. Joseph Garceau dit Richard, b. 1710

The family was not found on the 1707 census.

It would appear that Jean was captured (and not killed) during the siege of Port-Royal the previous year as he is listed as having died in 1711 while in captivity in Boston. The record of the death of a Joseph Garcot "SONT MORTS EN 1711 DURANT LEUR CAPTIVITE A BOSTON" (“DIED IN 1711 DURING THEIR CAPTIVITY IN BOSTON”) lists four people: Joseph Garcot, Angélique Comeau, the wife of Jacques Lord (who Stephen A. White notes died while in captivity in Boston between September and December 1711), Germain Bourgeois and Pierre Teriot; all four died during their captivity in Boston. As there was no Joseph Garceau, this record must refer to Jean Garceau.[6]

His wife Marie remarried in December, 1711[7]

Research Notes

Regarding his origin in France, his baptismal record has not been located but his origin was noted in his marriage record as being the parish of Saint-René, in the diocese of Poitiers. No such parish has been identified and so it remains unclear whether his origin is within or outside of Poitiers, but is noted as such.

Comments by Mark Deutsch: While there has never been a Saint-René parish in the diocese, now archdiocese of Poitiers, there have been several parishes and churches with the name Saint-Rémy or Rémi as it was often spelled, including the church in the village of Saint-Rémy, department of Deux-Sèvres, just northwest of Niort. Contrary to the above information, the diocese of Poitiers includes not just the department of Vienne, but also Deux-Sèvres, and was historically larger than that, extending to the ocean at one point. see- https://www.poitiers.catholique.fr/

Unfortunately, the departmental archives for Saint-Rémy go back only to 1693 and so would not include any potential baptismal records for Jean Garceau. There is, however, a marriage record for a Pierre Goicheau or Gaucheau and Jacquette Soulard, of 2 July 1685, at Saint-Marsault, about twenty miles north of Saint-Rémy in Deux-Sèvres and the diocese of Poitiers. There are no other records for a Pierre Garceau and Jacquette Soulard in the Deux Sèvres/Vienne archives. They are combined online as well as being coterminous with the diocese of Poitiers.

However if this was the marriage of his parents in 1685, then he would have been born perhaps 1686 at the earliest. However, he is documented as fighting in the King's war in 1690's. Young men could be quite young, but age 4 would be too young, maybe not even age 10 would be very likely. No sources found to document his presence in the Chacornacle company at that time. He served in it at the time of his marriage. All family trees mentioning the 1690's with various dates are unsourced. (Bourque-573 13:28, 22 December 2023 (UTC))

I've not found any baptismal record for Jean, despite a pretty thorough review of archival and database records. The couple mentioned had children in August 1686, September 1689, April 1695 and August 1698. The father's name was spelled both Gaucheau and Goicheau. It would be only speculation that Jean, if their son, would have been born out of wedlock before the marriage of 1685. Pierre Gaucheau/Goicheau was 33 at the time of the marriage and Jacquette 18, provided the ages given by the couple were accurate; a fifteen-year difference. As you know, the minimum age for marriage in France was 14 for boys and 12 for girls, with parental consent. It could have accounted for his joining the military, or Pierre could have been previously married and his first wife, Jean's mother, could have died and so raised by Jacquette whose name he gave at his own marriage. But all this is speculation, as are the several dates of birth I've seen; 1675 shown above, 1678,1680. No record indicates his year of birth. All I would say is that he would have been born at least 14 years before his marriage and as you say, some years before that as old enough to join the military. I do not know what age that was. I would not use a date certain unless I had evidence for that.

I agree that all those could be speculations, though some are interesting, especially if there was a different mother and Jacquette was his stepmother. Also changed the birth year to uncertain as it should be for an unsourced entry. Thank you for pointing that out.

In regard to Jean's death, PRDH and Généalogie Québec include record of the death of a Joseph Garcot "SONT MORTS EN 1711 DURANT LEUR CAPTIVITE A BOSTON" He is listed together with Angélique Comeau, the wife of Jacques Lord, who Stephen A. White notes died while in captivity in Boston between September and December 1711. As there was no Joseph Garceau, this record must refer to Jean Garceau. It would then appear Jean was captured and not killed during the siege of Port-Royal the previous year.

Mark, thank you for adding this information. That list of deaths in Boston is very nice documentation as it also has Angelique and two other people listed. I've updated the biography.

It is interesting that the parents marriage seems to be in 1685 so he might have been born in 1686. If so, then his participation in the regiment in 1690 was very unlikely for a four year old boy. I also searched for records of the dates of his participation and did not find anything except unsourced family trees and of course his marriage record that doesn't provide any clues as to earlier connections. Any help you can give on that would be great - either he did and was born earlier, or he did not and that marriage record for the parents would be realistic. I did not change his birth yet. A source would be great.

Hi Victoria! I wanted to point out that Jean's LNAB should be changed to Garceau. The Tranchemotangne name was a dit name, not a surname, and dit names do not belong in the LNAB field. Thanks!
