Biography

From c.1500-1574 three windmills stood west of the city in the meadows north of the river Rhine. They are pictured on Jacob van Deventer’s map (see p. 40), next to Lopsum Convent.
In 1544 the one nearest the city belonged to Gerrit’s son Roelof Gerritsz, and in 1558 half the mill was owned by his grandson, Gerrit Roelofsz. The latter and his wife, Lysbeth Harmensdr, whom he married during that year, were living in the mill house. During the siege of Leiden, these mills were taken down. Gerrit Roelofsz’s family sought protection within the city walls. In 1574, they were granted permission to erect a new mill; this time on the city walls (see 1574/2)." [1]

Deze tiende penning (niet die van Alva, geheven van koopmansgoederen) bedroeg IOO& van de huurwaarde.
