Hey Raymond,

Thanks again for signing the Honor Code some time ago. I wanted to check in with you to see how things are going. How do you like WikiTree so far? Have the tips in the New Member How To Pages been helpful or have they left you with questions?

P.S. To find reliable sources for your profiles, go to the Family Tree & Tools tab; select Genealogy Research and scroll down near the bottom of that list and select Research with RootsSearch. There are over 20 websites to access from there.

Thank you, Michael. I am enjoying exploring Wikitree and adding information. I haven't yet found any matches in my family to existing profiles, but i'm sure it will happen as a deepen and breadthen my tree. I have tried Roots Search, but have not yet learned about what it can do.

I have a question about citation etiquette. A friend has sent me numerous images of documents, which they found on a subscription site; these have been my primary source for finding ancestors. I have not uploaded any of these images to Wikitree, because i cannot provide full attributions. I have included much information from them, but only when i can cite the matching transcript, usually on Family Search.

The question: am i behaving responsibly, or am i being too conservative?

Thanks again for your hospitality.

Well, the documents are the source you use. So the reference is to those documents. If they can be found online, I would include the URL to them. Even if it is a paid provider, as that does not really change the document itself.

Posting the document as a scan here will require you to verify that you are allowed to do so. In my country everything old enough is open data, but that might not be the case with your documents. Then, add the line "in possession of Raymond Nickson" to your reference, so others know where they can request the document.

Welcome Raymond

Thanks for signing the Honor Code. I hope you discover as much about your family as I have about mine over the last several years.

Check out the How-to pages for some quick tips on working with both the Wiki pages and our other members. There is some great information on those pages.

Thank you for adding a GEDCOM. The GEDCOM does not automatically populate your tree. It generates a GEDCOMpare report which you work through, either accepting or rejecting all suggested matches. Once that has been done, you should see [add] buttons for each of the remaining names.

The GEDCOMpare process guide has tips on how to use the data in your file most efficiently.

For those using Chrome, Opera, or Firefox browsers, there is a tool that can help with the formatting of profiles which have been created through GEDCOM, so that you can concentrate on the research. You can read more about it in the WikiTree AGC FAQ.

If you have questions about how WikiTree works, let me know and I will try to find answers. To contact me, please log in to WikiTree and go to your profile. Use the ‘Reply’ link below my comment to be sure I will be notified. You can also click my name to send a private message, or post a comment, on my profile page.
