Research Notes
Note that the country we know as Germany (Deutschland) didn't exist until circa 1871. From 1806 to 1871, Mecklenburg-Schwerin was a quasi-independent (Grand) Duchy that was a member of various confederations/bunds. The confederations were more military alliances than political unifications, thus each member state still had its own head of state - e.g. the (Grand) Duke of Mecklenburg-Schwerin.
Heiliges Römisches Reich (Holy Roman Empire until 1806)
