Biography

Johanna Friederike Dorothea Heibein is one of twins.
Johanna Friederike Dorothea Heibein died young.

Johanna and her twin brother Christian were born 2 May 1838 in Garvensdorf, Mecklenburg-Schwerin, Deutscher Bund. They were the children of Friederich Christoph Gustav Heibein (1811-bef.1870), day labourer in Garvensdorf, and Magdalena "Lene" Sophia Dorothea Christiane (Niemann) Heibein (1811-1847).[1]

The twins were baptized at Mulsow Parish, Passee, Mecklenburg-Schwerin, on 6 May 1838. She was named Johanna Friederike Dorothea after her godparents who were 1. Friederike Niemann day laborer wife in Garvensdorf 2. Dorothea Bühring day laborer wife in Garvensdorf 3. Johann Westphal day laborer in Hageböck.[1]

Life was hard in Mecklenburg-Schwerin. In addition to poverty and unrest (see Wikipedia: Grand Duchy of Mecklenburg-Schwerin), Johanna lost several family members:

  1. 1845: brother Ernst to typhoid
  2. 1847: mother Lene to pneumonia and post-partum complications.
  3. 1851: sister Lisette

Johanna Friederike Dorothea Heibein, born in Garvensdorf, daughter of Friedrich Heibein (day laborer in Garvensdorf) and Magdalene nee Niemann, passed away May 27, 1850, aged 12 years and 25 days, cause of death was "Magenseuche" (literal translation = "stomach epidemic" - not yet matched to an English-language disease). Burial was May 29, 1850.[2] Note that the priest also added the death date to the baptism record.

Research Notes

  • Note that the country we know as Germany (Deutschland) didn't exist until circa 1871. From 1806 to 1871, Mecklenburg-Schwerin was a quasi-independent (Grand) Duchy that was a member of various confederations/bunds. The confederations were more military alliances than political unifications, thus each member state still had its own head of state - e.g. the (Grand) Duke of Mecklenburg-Schwerin.
    • Heiliges Römisches Reich (Holy Roman Empire until 1806)
    • independent Herzogtum (independent Duchy 1806-1808)
    • Rheinbund (Confederation of the Rhine 1808-1813)
    • independent Herzogtum (independent Duchy 1813-1815)
    • Deutscher Bund (German Confederation 1815-1866)
    • independent Großherzogtum (independent Grand Duchy 1866-1867)
    • Norddeutscher Bund (North German Confederation 1867-1870)
    • Deutsches Reich (Kaiserreich) (German Empire 1871-1918)
    • Deutsches Reich (Weimarer Republik) (Weimar Republic 1918-1933)
    • Deutsches Reich (Nationalsozialistische Diktatur) (Nazi Germany 1933-1934)
  • As above, Johanna and many of her siblings were born in the Grand Duchy of Meckenburg-Schwerin, Deutscher Bund.
  • Following the death of Johanna's mother, Lene, her father married Johanna Sophia Maria (Geitmann) Heibein (1820-1903).
