Biography

Thomas Jones was born in Shropshire, England.

Thomas was born early in 1848 the son of Evan Jones and Esther Richards. His birth was registered during Jan-Mar 1848 at the registry Office, Wellington, Shropshire, England. ^[1] He was baptized on 6 Feb 1848 into the Anglican Church at All Saints, Wellington, Shropshire, England. ^[2]

At the time of the 1851 census Thomas, aged 3, was recorded as living at Dawley Green Lane, Dawley, Shropshire, England with his parents Evan Jones (40), a Collier, and Esther (26) and his younger brother Edward (1). ^[3]

By 1861 Thomas was 15 and a Stone Miner living at Mill Lane, Dawley with his parents Evan (52), a Stone Miner and Esther (37), and his brothers Edward (11), Robert (10), and William (8), all Stone Miners. ^[4]

On 2 Apr 1871, at the time of the 1871 census, and aged 23 Thomas was still living with his parents. The household lived at Langley Terrace, Dawley, and comprised his father Evan (60), a Stone Miner, mother Esther (45), Thomas (23), unmarried and a Miner, brothers Edward (21), Robert (19), William (18), all Miners. There was also a visitor John Richards (31) a Miner and a Lodger James Wall (47), a Stone Miner. ^[5]

Thomas married Jane Jones aged 21, whose father was Joseph Jones, on 16 Apr 1871 at Dawley Magna. ^[6]

Jane died four years later between Oct-Dec 1875. ^[7] It is probable that, because Thomas and Jane had children, Jane's death was a major disaster and child care, along with providing an income, would have been almost impossible for Thomas to achieve. It is likely that, because of this, Thomas teamed up with Ann Smith who was also widowed thus amalgamating the two families.

Marriage Banns about the marriage of Thomas aged 28 to Ann Smith (28), both widowed, were issued on 28 May 1878 at Dawley Magna. Ann's father was Robert Webb. ^[8] Thomas and Ann, both married at Dawley, on 28 Jun 1876. ^[9]

In 1881 Thomas aged 33 and a Coal Miner had moved to 5 Coopers Yard, Bridge Street, Hindley with his wife Ann (33) and children Emily (10) a Cotton Reeler, Isabella (8), Jane (5) and John (9 months). There were also two unmarried boarders from Shropshire, George Griffiths (23) and Henry Heighway (21), both Coal Miners. Jane was Ann's child from her previous marriage. ^[10]

By 1891 Thomas aged 44 and still a Coal Miner had moved with his family to 110 Bridgewater Street, Hindley with his wife Ann (44) and children. The children were Isabella (18) and Jane (14) both Cotton Spinners, Robert (9), William (9), and Elizabeth (7) Scholars and infants Bertha (3) and John (1). ^[11]

Thomas died aged 48 at 24 Argyle St, Hindley, and was buried on 12 Dec 1896 at Hindley Cemetery Non-Conformist Plot A 4-242. ^{[12] [13] [14]}
