Alexander was born about 1629. He passed away in 1672.
Summary biography by Henry Hoff:
ALEXANDER DE HINOJOSA was born in Zaltbommel, say 1629. He was an officer in Brazil at the time of the surrender to the Portuguese in 1654. He was in New Amsterdam by October 1655. In 1657 he was sent to the Delaware colony, which the Dutch had recently acquired from Sweden. Despite his difficult personality and high-handed manner, he was made director of the Delaware colony in 1660, a position he held until 1664 when the British took New Netherland. He remained in the New World for about two years. By 1669 he was back in the Netherlands where he was executed for mutiny in 1672. He married, probably in the Netherlands or Brazil, MARGARETHA DE HAES, who appears to have died about the same time he did.
Their children settled in Maryland where Alexander had bought land. The family was all naturalized in Maryland as English citizens on 19 April 1671, though they must have been living in the Netherlands at that time. Their petition for naturalization lists the parents as “Alexander Dhyniossa of Fosters Island in the County of Talbott and Margeretta his wife” and the children as “Alexander, Ioannes, Peter, Maria, Iohanna, Christina, and Barbara … all borne in Holland.”
