Biography

Cornelis Janszen Clopper was a native of Bergen op Zoom in Brabant who emigrated to New Netherland. Record of his baptism has not been located; assistance in finding it would be welcomed. Birth date is estimated as 1632, based on his marriage in 1657.

In Cornelius Jansen Clopper and his Descendants Witcraft said that "Cornelius" was in New Amsterdam as early as 1652; the source of this information is not indicated. He further stated that Cornelius was a blacksmith who established his shop at the site of the modern intersection of Maiden Lane and Pearl Street, which came to be called "De Smiths Valley" due to his presence there.[1]

He married Heijltje Pieters, from Amsterdam, Netherlands, in 1657. They entered their banns of marriage in the Reformed Dutch Church of New Amsterdam on 28 October 1657.[2]

Cornelius jansen Clopper, "being sick," and Heyltie Clopper, "of indifferent health, being in child bed," made a joint will on 10 September 1669, recorded by Nicholas Bayard, Secretary of the Mayor's Court of New York. The will provided that the survivor of the two should have all the estate, to bring up and support the five under-aged children, named as Dinah, Margaretta, Johannah, Catharina and Petrenella, "and such other children as may be procreated."

Cornelis died before 24 June 1693, when letters of administration were granted to his widow Heyltie Clopper.

Heyltje/Hilletje Pieters subsequently married Sourt Olphertszen on 26 September 1697, in the New York Dutch Church.
