Biography

John was born at Levenbank Hospital, Ulverstone, TAS , the son of Frederick Henderson Henry, farmer, 31, and Hilary Henry nee Shann, 27, who had been married in Victoria on 2 June 1945 [1].

His primary education was at Cressy Area School, TAS and secondary education was at Launceston Church Grammar School, TAS, whence he matriculated in 1964. He graduated as a bachelor of laws from the University of Melbourne in 1969.

He enlisted in the Citizen Military Force, later renamed the Army Reserve, in1965 in Melbourne university Regiment, whence he was commissioned on 31 July 1969 [2] as a lieutenant in the corps of infantry. He was subsequently transferred to Royal Australian Artillery, and retired as a lieutenant colonel from active service in that corps. He holds a long service award, the Reserve Forces Decoration (RFD).

He was admitted to practice as a barrister and solicitor of the Supreme Court of Victoria on 2 March1972 [3] and retired from practice on 30 November 2021, having practised throughout that period as a solicitor acting in the field of wills and estates, with accreditation from 1 November 1993 by the Law Institute of Victoria as Specialist in that area [4].

He practised from 19 September 1986 until 19 August 2002 as a Notary Public for the Counties of Evelyn, Mornington and Bourke, VIC, registered in the Crown Office of the Court of Chancery, London, [5], and from 19 August 2002 until 30 Noember 2021 as a Notary Public for the State of Victoria, AUS, having signed the Roll of Notaries kept by the Supreme Court of Victora under the Public Notaries Act 2001 of the State of Victoria [6].

On 6 April 1979 John married Mary Helen Henry, born 19 November 1948, the daughter of Peter John Henry and Helen Clare Henry (nee Young) at St Mary's Catholic Church, Williamstown, VIC. [7]

Congratulations on certifying to work on pre-1700 profiles! It’s very important to read and understand the Pre-1700 Profiles page. These profiles for deep ancestors are shared by many, and collaborating on them works best if we all follow the guidelines in the certification quiz.

Primary sources should always be added to pre-1700 profiles at the time they are created. If you don't have a source for a pre-1700 profile, it would be best to ask for help in the G2G forum before creating the profile.
