Biography

Charles Eldredge, born 28 Aug 1743 @ Groton, Connecticut, was a son of Mary (Starr) Eldredge (1722-1779) and Charles Eldredge (1720-1795).

He married 13 Sep 1764 at Groton, Connecticut, Rachel (Avery). They had 5 children, born at Groton [1]:

  1. Charles Eldredge, b. June 7, 1765
  2. Mary (Eldredge; 1767-1854), b. Sept. 25, 1767; m. Ebenezer Avery (no. 693)
  3. William Eldredge (1769-1869); m. Eliza Avery (no. 684)
  4. David Eldredge, b. Oct. 23, 1772; d. Oct. 14, 1778
  5. Rachel Eldredge, b. Aug. 23, 1777; d. Sept. 4, 1777 at Groton

Rachel (Avery) Eldredge died 31 Aug 1777, as did soon their daughter Rachel. Charles later married second, Gloriana Havens.

Charles Eldridge was on the first committee of correspondence of Groton; ensign in militia; wounded at Fort Griswold (Conn. Men in Rev'n, 649). His store and house on Main street were burned "when Arnold burnt the town."

By the time of his death, in 1798, he had only two surviving children. In his will, which was probated on Nov. 30th, 1798, he left his wife, Gloriana, the use and improvement of his farm, and left almost everything else equally to his adult children William Eldridge and Mary Avery [2].

His tombstone, located in Eldredge Cemetery, Ledyard, New London County, Connecticut, USA bears the following [3]:

"Charles Eldridge Esq., after great suffering from a wound received at Fort Griswold, Sept. 6, 1781, died Nov. 20, 1798, aged 55 years."
