Communication Preferences: I am interested in communicating private message with anyone who shares the same genealogical or historical interests. My family tree is at <https://www.ancestry.com/family-tree/person/tree/164375749/person/392141607996/facts>.
I am starting with the immediate family of my 3rd great-grandmother, who is sister to a person posted here. i am still debating if I should spend the time moving my 1700-person family over to WikiTree. It seems like a lot of work to port over all of the citations. I am open to being convinced. I like the collaborative nature of this and the expectation of citations.

Hello, Joe!

Congratulations on certifying to work on pre-1700 profiles! It’s VERY IMPORTANT to read and understand the Help:Pre-1700 Profiles page. These profiles for deep ancestors are shared by many, and collaborating on them works best if we all follow the guidelines in the certification quiz.

Primary sources should always be added to pre-1700 profiles at the time they are created. If you don't have a source for a pre-1700 profile, it would be best to ask for help in the G2G forum before creating the profile.

Thank you, Hilary.

I found WikiTree from somebody in Ancestry who has shifted over to this platform. I have done a few small targeted searches and that person is the only branch I found here. They encouraged me to upload my Ancestry GEDCOM file, so I searched around and I am not seeing the answer to a couple of my questions. Maybe you can help?

I have 1723 people in Ancestry and I am a little concerned about trying to maintain the tree in both places. On the one hand, my mother's side of the family overlaps several helpful people in Ancestry. On the other hand, this person I mentioned, who is here, is on my father's side and I am tempted by the spirit of collaboration. I am trying to only follow people who are diligent in their sources, which seems to be a thing here (happy happy). I have not looked at the details of a GEDCOM file. Can you tell me if the sources I have added to my 1700 people would be ported over to WikiTree if I made the transition?

I also see that when I look at the person's family tree, the ancestors that I have in common are managed by other people. I see that the FAQ indicates that when we create new people, we should suggest edits to others, rather than creating it independently and then trying to merge; but I am not seeing how -- when I import my GEDCOM -- if or how that merging would happen. Would I have to merge the 100-or-so people by hand? Is there an automated process that helps merge existing people in my GEDCOM file to the existing people in WikiTree?

I think all of the question I have is: how difficult is the transition when i upload my GEDCOM? If there is a detailed description existing that I have not found, I am happy for your first answer to be "look here".

Thanks

Joe

Hi Joe,

With the aim being for each person to have only one profile on WikiTree the process with a GEDCOM is to use GEDCOMpare which aims to search WikiTree for each individual in the GEDCOM to see if they are already on WikiTree. Anyone who is already on WikiTree should not be added and you should ask to join the trusted list do you can add anything that may be missing.

GEDCOM files do not import ideally and often require some clean up of the profiles created by the import. A member created a browser extension which is now incorporated in the WikiTree Browser extension and can help with the clean up of the imports. This same member has created and regularly updates another extension which helps with sourcing profiles. I suggest you look at apps in the dropdown menu find to get more information.

There is a limit to GEDCOM size so I would suggest using a small one to start with and there are instructions at GEDCOM Help page for doing this.

Hope this helps.

Thank you. That was helpful. I have started a small family in the tree.
