Biography

Samuel was born September 13, 1907 in Manhattan, New York, New York, United States. His parents were Emil Reich and Esther (Gilbert) Reich.[1]

In 1910, Samuel (shown as Sam, age 2) lived at 54 First Avenue in Manhattan, New York, New York, United States with his father Emil (age 37), mother Esther (age 28), and siblings Rose (age 7), Charles (age 6), and Harry (age 4). A servant, Jenny Pollack (age 20) and shoe salesman Charles Gilbert (age 22) also lived with the family. His father was the proprietor of a shoe store.[2]

In 1915, Samuel (age 7) lived in Manhattan, New York, New York, United States with his father Emil (shown as Ameil, age 39), mother Esther (shown as Ester, age 34), and siblings Rose (age 12), Charles (shown as Chad, age 11), and Harry (shown as Carlie, age 9). A servant, Mary Bemsteater (age 19) also lived with the family.[3]

In 1920, Samuel (age 12) lived at 49 First Avenue in Manhattan, New York, New York, United States with his father Emil (age 48), mother Esther (age 37), and siblings Rose (age 16), Charles (age 15), and Harry (age 14). His father was a real estate agent.[4]

In 1930, Samuel (age 22) lived at 144 Bay 29th Street in Brooklyn, Kings, New York, United States with his widowed mother Esther (age 50) and brother Harry (age 24). His married sister Rose Offenberg (shown as Authenberg, age 27), her husband Ben Offenberg (shown as Authenberg, age 33), and their daughter Emily Offenberg (shown as Authenberg, age 5) also lived with the family. Ben was a salesman for a dress house.[5]

Samuel (shown as Sam Lew) married Frances Lichtman March 4, 1934 in Brooklyn, Kings, New York, United States[6] and they had two children (see Research Notes). Samuel and Frances used the last name Rich from then on.

In 1940, Samuel (age 32) and Frances (shown as Francis, age 28) lived in Brooklyn, Kings, New York, United States with daughter Judith (age 2). Carmen Garcia (age 25), a maid, also lived with the family.[7]

The family moved to an apartment in Yonkers, Westchester, New York, United States between 1940 and the birth of their son, Richard, in 1945.[8]

When Sam's doctor prescribed a warm, dry climate to mitigate the impact of a medical problem, he and Frances divested themselves of all their New York ties and possessions and prepared to move to Arizona, United States. About 1950 their extended family gathered at a restaurant for a farewell lunch, then said final goodbyes at Grand Central Station in Manhattan, New York, New York, United States, when they boarded the train and waved to them as the train pulled out until their window was out of sight.[8]

Frances and Sam bought property in Tucson, Pima, Arizona, United States, and arranged for the building of their new home there. They only returned to New York a few times, for brief visits, on major family occasions (i.e., graduations, weddings, births, and funerals).[8]

Sam was living in Pima County, Arizona, United States when he died[9] March 25, 1991. He was buried in block 28 of the Evergreen Memorial Park in Tucson, Pima, Arizona, United States beneath a stone inscribed Loving Husband, Father, and Grandfather.[10]
