Biography

Samuel was christened 7 JAN 1816 at Horslott, Clawton, Devon, England

In 1841 worked for William Furze as an Agricultural Labourer at Horslett Lane in 1841. and as a servent [1]

Samuel, aged 29, & Louisa with their daughter Elizabeth sailed with Thomas, Samuel's brother and his sister Elizabeth & her husband John on the "Lord William Bentinck" a barque arriving at Pt Henry,Victoria on the 22nd of August 1844. They were assisted migrants and their amount of bounty was £18-14/- [2]

In 1847 Samuel arrived in the land of the Wadawurrung Balug people, at the time in the process of colonization and the location of significant conflict. [3][4] He took up farming leasing the property "Westcot" at Barrabool on the Merrawarp Estate and "Shamrock Vale Farm" on Strathlachlan Estate from Captain Swanston & Edward Willis. The terms were that the owners reserve the right for any ingress or egress for any cows, horses, bullocks or wagons at any time. All minerals such as gold, copper etc. remain the property of the owners. [5] "Westcot" was purchased in 1850 which included stables built by Isaac Westcott in 1843 [6]

The property at Barrabool was sold in 1875 and the Heard family moved to Mt Arapilies or Djurite in the Lowan District, near Horsham, shortly after the last of the Djurid Balud people had been relocated to mission stations [7][8] . They named their property "Henford Barton", Henford being the village in Devon where Louisa was living when she married Samuel.

Samuel died on 17 or 19th AUG 1882 at "Henford Barton", Lowan, Victoria in the Noradjuha shire, Wimmera county Borung [9]

He is buried at Nurrabiel Cemetery, Vic. Australia
