Biography

Arising from the results of genetic genealogy, it appears John Ritchings descends from the Angles who originated in what is now Denmark/Northern Germany. The Angles invaded the British Isles around 475 and established the Kingdom of Mercia. The Ritchings’s paper trail leads back to what is now the Gloucestershire/Wiltshire borders around the settlements of Cirencester and Kempsford in Gloucestershire and Purton in Wiltshire. Kempsford, on the river Thames, is located on the border between what were the ancient kingdoms of Mercia and Wessex.

The Ritchings name probably derives from the Anglo-Saxon, Hich recorded in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle. It has evolved into 26 known variations, of which the most commonly occurring are Hitchings, Hitchins, Ritchings, Richings and Richins. There is a possible French, Norman, origin for the Ritchings name, but John Ritchings’s family is Anglo-Saxon and has no known Norman connections. In addition, there is a possible Gaelic origin for the Hitchins found in the South West of England. There is no known connection between family Ritchings and the South West Hitchins.

The Ritchings family is a small family in genealogical terms, which was found in the area around Cirencester, but in more recent years has spread to commonwealth countries and the US of A. A large number of Richins family members left the Painswick area of Gloucester to emigrate to Utah in the US of A with the Church of Latter Day Saints. There is a genetic connection between John Ritchings and these Latter Day Saints, but the paper trail has not yet been established.

Genetic genealogy has also established a link to a branch of family Holloway with a MRCA around 1550 in Gloucestershire/Wiltshire, England.

John Ritchings’s interest in genealogy and its associated history began, as a hobby, in 1972.

In November 2013 this message was posted on WikiTree:

"My family members have been researching our family history for many years and more recently this has involved genetic genealogy. As a family, we have decided to share our research with anyone who is interested. Wikitree provides that opportunity."

After spending over two years of entering data, WikiTree has arbitrarily banned me from sharing any further data or maintaining the data that has already been entered on its site. WikiTree has confirmed that it does not wish to share in any of my family's further research.

Greetings David

I was banned from WikiTree by someone who talked to his ancestors. I do not, therefore, have anything more to do with WikiTree. Furthermore, others come along and make changes to data that has taken years to research without any evidence to back the changes. Your note is beyond petty, and may I suggest that if such a change is so important, you, like everybody else, can make any change you like to any profile.

Regards

John
