James Heming was the first American to train as a chef in France.[1]
James Hemings became the property of Thomas Jefferson in Jan 1774 when the estate of his father-in-law John Wayles was settled. He served Jefferson as house servant, messenger, driver, traveling attendant and eventually as his chef.
Freed by Jefferson in 1796 after training his brother Peter for 3 years to replace him as chef.
In 1801 James committed suicide after a bout of heavy drinking at Baltimore, Maryland, where he was working as a cook in a tavern.
