Biography

James (Duff) Duff of Knockleith was born in Scotland.

James was born in 1820. He was the son of Garden Duff and Louisa Dunbar.[1]

James was a Captain in the 74th Regiment, and then Lt. Colonel of the Banff, Moray, and Nairn Militia. He served in the Kaffir War, and at the close of one engagement was in command of the regiment owing to the death of the Colonel and other officers. After his retirement, and until his death, he lived at Knockleith, in Auchterless, where he built a house on the farm left to him by his father on a thirty-eight years' lease. He acted as guardian during the minority of his nephew Garden.[2]

He married Jane Bracken Dunlop in 1855 in Edinburgh.[3]

He passed away in 1898.[4]
