Biography

U.S. Southern Colonies Project logo
Sarah (Cartmell) Chester was a Virginia colonist.

Sarah was probably born about 1692 in New Castle County, Province of Pennsylvania. She is the daughter of Nathaniel Cartmell and Dorothy Poole.

Sarah married Thomas Chester about 1715 in New Castle County, Delaware Colony (formerly Pennsylvania). Known children named in their grandmother's will include:

  1. Thomas Chester
  2. David Chester
  3. Mary Chester
  4. Susanna Chester
  5. Elizabeth (Chester) Smith

Sarah's death date is unknown. She probably died after 1750 in Frederick County, Virginia. Sarah Chester and her husband Thomas Chester are named in the will of Sarah's mother, Dorothy (Poole) Cartmell, written 20 April 1749 and proved 14 November 1750 in Frederick County, Virginia.[1]

Birth

Many online family trees state Sarah was born about 1700, usually in Virginia somewhere. This birth date is probably incorrect. Sarah's two oldest siblings were born about 1685 and 1689. Next sibling, Nathaniel Cartmell, is also said to have been born about 1700. This leaves an unlikely gap of 11 years between the two oldest and two youngest siblings. Also a birth year of 1700 would give Sarah an age at marriage of 15 in 1715. Estimated birth years of 1690 and 1692 for Nathaniel and Sarah make more sense. They would also have been born in Province of Pennsylvania. The Cartmell family did not move to Virginia until about 1730/35.

Note on New Castle, Pennsylvania/Delaware

New Castle was originally settled by the Dutch West India Company in 1651. It changed hands, and names, several times. In 1664, the English seized the entire New Netherland Colony, changed the name to "New Castle" and made it the capital of their Delaware Colony. In 1680 New Castle was conveyed to William Penn and became part of the Province of Pennsylvania. Upon petition of the residents of New Castle, a separate legislature was granted in 1702 and Delaware formally broke from Pennsylvania in 1704 taking New Castle County with it.[2]
