Research Notes

Thomas was removed as a son of Margaret de la Haye and Robert Keith, who had no known issue. He was simultaneously attached to both Robert Keith and Margaret de la Haye and his correct father, David de la Haye, and mother, a daughter of John Keith of Innerpeffer.

I think that the dates suggested for birth etc are likely incorrect and he is older than estimated here. He is stated to have been a Commissioners to treat with the English in 1353 and a hostage in 1354. It would seem unlikely he did this when he was 10-12 years old. Also note, if considering The Scots Peerage that his daughter's tocher was discharged in 1376, thus she was already married, thus born about 1360 latest. The confusion stems from the Charter of 1372 by Robert II which has been assumed to be the point of marriage. It couldn't have been they must have been married well before as their eldest son William is of age and Constable of Scotland well before 1393. The charter of 1372 is when he became king (1371).

There is a Thomas Hay stated as son to this Profile. Are we sure of this? Sir Thomas is not recorded in The Scots Peerage (Vol 3, page 562) as having a son Thomas although there was one in the next generation.
