Dalton McGuinty is a Canadian politician who served as the 24th premier of Ontario from 2003 to 2013.
Dalton was born in Ottawa, Ontario on July 19, 1955, the son of Dalton McGuinty Sr., a politician and professor, and Elizabeth (Pexton) McGuinty, a nurse.
He married Terri.
Following the death of his father in 1990, Dalton successfully ran in his father's seat to become the Member of the Ontario Provincial Parliament for Ottawa South (a riding he held until 2013). In 1996, he became leader of the Liberal Party of Ontario and served as Leader of the Opposition. In the provincial election of 1999, his party won and he became premier. They won again in the 2007 and the 2011 elections. Dogged by a controversy over cancelled gas plants, he was replaced as Liberal leader and premier by Kathleen Wynne in February 2013.
After he left politics, he was named a senior fellow at Harvard University's Weatherhead Center for International Affairs and published a memoir in 2014 called Dalton McGuinty: Making a Difference.
