James was born in 1842. He is the son of Carson Arbuthnot and Frances Jones. James was raised in the timber industry of his father and grandfather in western Pennsylvania.
In 1853, he moved with his family to Tama County, Iowa.[1]
In 1859, James left there with his father, brothers and a brother-in-law for the gold rush in Colorado.
They arrived in the spring of 1859 when Boulder was just three months old. James is listed as being in the 1860 Census for the Gold Hill Mining District, No, 1, Nebraska Territory (now Gold Hill, Boulder County, Colorado). James participated in the "Arbuthnot & Sons" family business of gold mining in several locations. James was in Company D of the 3rd Colorado Cavalry during the Civil war. His unit participated in the Sand Creek Massacre. He was a farmer. [2]
