In 1949, Mrs. Zee A. Barron accepted the call for action by the State Department of Education to assist in establishing Coahoma Junior College. With grace, she accepted the call. Mrs. Barron wore many hats, including but not limited to, the Dean of Academics, Registrar, Student Personnel Director and a full-time English and Education teacher for the first three years of Coahoma Junior College’s existence. Her vast knowledge and understanding of how minds should be educated led to the first accreditation for the college. In 1957, she encouraged the student body to elect the first “Miss Coahoma Junior College,” and she organized the first coronation ceremony. To this day, the coronation has been one of the highlights of each year’s student activities. Mrs. Zee A. Barron retired in 1976, and the Zee A. Barron Student Union was named in her honor.
