Margaret (Mary) Willie Arvin ARRC was a nurse from Henderson, Kentucky, who served in the First World War in France at a British Army Hospital, and was the most decorated Kentucky woman veteran serving in World War I.


Margaret Willie "Mary" (Arvin) (Tiller) Sissons was born on the 21st of April 1879 in Henderson, Kentucky, United States.[1] She was the daughter of William Meade Arvin and Elizabeth "Bettie" (Towles) Arvin.[1]

Betty joined the American Red Cross in 1917. She was stationed at The Harvard Unit, Base Hospital #5, a hospital unit staffed by physicians and nurses from the Harvard University Hospital, in Boston, Massachusetts.[1]

Mary first married William H. Tiller, a World War I veteran.[1]

The 1926 Orlando City Directory lists Mrs. Mary W. Tiller as living at 615 E. Concord Avenue.[2]

On 23 April 1930, Mary A. Tiller (listed as being a 35-year-old widow) lived at 615 Concord in Orlando. She owned her home. She worked as a registered nurse at a hospital.[3]

Mary married second on 27 November 1931 in Jacksonville, Florida to Robert H. Sissons, also a World War I veteran.[1][4]

In 1935, R. H. and Mary W. Sissons lived in Precinct 14 of Orange County, Florida.[5]

In 1945, Robert H. and Mary W. Sissons lived in Precinct 14 of Orange County, Florida. He was retired and she was a housewife.[6]

Mary died from carcinoma of the uterus on the 9th of September 1947 in her hometown of Henderson, Henderson County, Kentucky. She was laid to rest in the Fernwood Cemetery in Henderson.[1][7]
