Biography

Sydney Joseph Barnes was born on 5th September 1857 in Bowden, South Australia, Australia to parents Joseph and Jane Barnes (nee Pollard). He was their eldest son and child.

Victoria

Sydney travelled with his parents to Victoria for a few years in the early 1860s, when his mother went to assist her father and siblings after her mother's death.

Occupation

Sydney became a carrier.

Marriage

Sydney married Elizabeth Thornton in All Saints Church, Hindmarsh, South Australia, Australia on 2.3.1882.

They had 3 children. The children were a son named Olven Sydney (1889), a daughter named Jane Cordelia (1882) and another daughter Edith Thornton (1892).

Fined

Sydney was fined 1 pound when he left the service of his employer, Richard Hayley, without permission. This was in 1878 when he was 18 years old.

He was fined again on 11.6.1883 when aged 26 for using indecent language in Hindley St, Adelaide. On this occassion, the fine was 10 shillings.

Rescue from Drowning

Sydney saved a 12-year-old girl from drowning when she fell off the end of Henley Beach jetty on 14.11.1898. In the discussions that occured with police and the girl's family after the rescue, it came to be known that the girl was the 12th person who Sydney has rescued from drowning. For his efforts, the Royal Humane Society awarded him a certificate of merit in August 1899. Sydney told people he had learnt to swim in the Torrens River and the first person he ever saved was his brother when he was a boy. A story about the award was recorded in the Express and Telegraph newspaper on 21.10.1899 and told the story of all the rescues.

Sydney did not collect the award in 1898 due to illness. He eventually collected the award in 1901.

Death

Sydney died at Richard Street, Hindmarsh, South Australia, Australia on 9th October 1919, aged 62 years. He was buried at Hindmarsh Cemetery, Hindmarsh.
