Jane Pollard was born in 1826 in Gwinear, Cornwall, England to parents Christopher and Mary Pollard (nee Floyd). She was their second child and eldest daughter.
Jane was baptised on 7.5.1826 at Gwinear in Cornwall.
Jane's family were involved in the Cornish mining trade and family legend states that Jane herself began working in mines at a very young age (approximately 6 years old).
Jane is located in the 1841 census for Cornwall at Goosehaven in Perranzabuloe, with her parents and siblings. She and her elder siblings are employed in the mining trade in different capacities.
Jane's eldest brother James died of drowning during in thunderstorm that flooded the East Wheal Rose Mine in July 1846. Jane became a very religious person and it is believed that this event may have been the impetus for this occuring.
Jane was known as ‘Jenny’ and had followed ‘Bryanites’ or Bible Christians since childhood. In the mine, “where on account of her honesty and integrity, she was placed in charge of about 100 young women who were engaged in sorting copper”. “She used to go into the assorting rooms and hold prayer meetings at noonday.
Jane travelled with her parents and siblings to South Australia onboard the ship "Sultana', arriving on the 10.8.1851.
The family first settled in the Bowden area of South Australia. Jane remained in the area when her parents and siblings branched out to other areas of the country.
On the 22.6.1854 Jane Pollard married Joseph Barnes in the Bible Christian Chapel at Bowden. Jane Pollard was reported as the ‘daughter of Christopher Pollard of Bowden’ in the Northern Argus on 24.6.1854.
Jane and Joseph had 2 known children born in Bowden before 1859 - sons Sydney Joseph and Albert James.
Between 1858 and 1860, 4 of Jane's siblings and her mother died, some of them within several days of each other. Their deaths were the result of poor conditions on the goldfields and mining locations.
Possibly because of these deaths, Jane and her husband Joseph decided to move to the Castlemaine area of Victoria, Australia in 1860, on the goldfields where her father and some of her siblings were located.
In 1861 they established a Sunday School in Specimen Gully in the Castlemaine Circuit.
In 1863, Jane and Joseph returned overland from Victoria to Bowden, SA, where they settled for the remainder of their lives.
Their third and final child, Mary Jane Pollard, was born there in 1865.
Jane died on 27.3.1882 at Bowden. She is buried at Hindmarsh Cemetery.
