Corporal Orville Bartlett served in the United States Army in World War II Service started: 18 May 1942 Unit(s): 1961st Service Command Unit Service ended: 28 Nov 1944
Orville Eugene Bartlett entered the world on June 2, 1913, in Lincoln, Nebraska, as the son of Lucy Conklin, aged 43, and William Bartlett, aged 48 [1][2][3][4]. [5][6].Amongst his parents' brood of eleven children, Orville held the distinction of being the youngest. However, at the tender age of 4, tragedy struck the family when his older sister, Lula B Bartlett (1907-1918), passed away at the age of 10.
In 1920, the Bartlett family rented a home on North 29th Street in Lancaster, Lincoln, Nebraska. Orville, approximately 7 years old at the time, resided in the household with his three siblings. His father, a teamster, and his brother Justin Snow Bartlett, also a teamster, lived in the same home along with Justin's wife and infant child. Orville's mother worked as a laborer cleaning homes. Education played a role in their lives, as Orville and his other two siblings attended school while growing up.[7]
In 1930, the Bartlett family owned the same home, which became a bustling hub for three of Orville's married siblings and their respective families. Orville himself took on odd jobs to contribute to the household income, while his father retired from his former occupation as a teamster. Meanwhile, Orville's mother served as a dedicated household servant for a private family. Among the siblings in the home, Aaron pursued a career in trucking, accompanied by his wife and infant son.Hazel, like her mother, worked as a private servant, while her husband, Pearl Corning, joined the ranks of truckers. Lucy, Orville's sister, resided in the home with her husband, Earl Buckridge, who engaged in various odd jobs[8]
In 1937, tragedy struck when Orville and his sister Hazel were involved in a devastating collision between their vehicle and a train. Unfortunately, Hazel lost her life in the accident. Miraculously, Orville managed to survive the collision, albeit with cuts and bruises, enduring the physical scars as a testament to the harrowing incident. [9]
By 1940, Orville and Lucy remained as the sole siblings residing in the family home. However, the household had expanded with the presence of Lucy's husband and their four children, creating a lively and bustling environment. As the years advanced, Orville's parents had reached an elderly stage in life, retiring from their previous occupations. Orville himself pursued a career as a filing clerk, dedicating his days to organizing and managing important documents. The chapter of formal education had closed for Orville, as he no longer attended school. Meanwhile, Lucy's husband found employment in a stone quarry, while Lucy dedicated her time to caring for their growing brood, tending to the needs and nurturing the futures of their children. [10][11]
Appearance
He was about 5'6 with blonde hair and blue eyes. [1]
Military
In 1942, he lived in Los Angeles, California and on May 18, 1942, Orville enlisted in the military, beginning his service. He was assigned to the Service Command Unit 1961, where he fulfilled his duties until his discharge on November 28, 1944. As a corporal in the unit, Orville contributed to its operations and played a role in supporting the military's logistical needs during that time.[11][6]
Following his service during the war, Orville settled in El Monte, Los Angeles, California, where he resided in 1950. During this period, he shared his home with his mother and his niece, Rosabelle Buckridge, who was one of his sister Lucy's daughters. In terms of employment, Orville worked as a payroll clerk for a newspaper.[12]
Marriage and Family
Orville Bartlett and Dorothy Irene HarpstriteDorothy Irene Harpstrite tied the knot on September 1, 1954, in Los Angeles, California. However, their marital journey proved to be short-lived, as the couple decided to part ways and eventually divorced. Dorothy went on to marry someone else five years after her marriage to Orville. The specific details surrounding the duration of their relationship and subsequent separation remain unknown. [13]It appears that Orville and Dorothy did not have any children together. In Orville's obituary, his surviving siblings are mentioned, suggesting that he did not have any children of his own. [14]
Death and Burial
On July 18, 1970, Orville Bartlett passed away. He found his final resting place in Rose Hills Memorial Park, located in Whittier, California. [2] in California. [14][6][15]
