Susannah Deborah Bean was born on May 04, 1830 in the Cherokee Nation (East). Her parents were John Bean , a white man,and Ruth Starr a Cherokee. The family emigrated to Indian Territory as "Old Settlers" in 1834. ^[1] According to Emmet Starr, Susie married James Adair, also Cherokee, on February 22, 1849. ^[2] James appears on the 1851 Drennan Roll in Going Snake District, ^[3] while Susie and their first child, Penelope, appear on the "Old Settler" Roll. ^[4] They were the parents of seven children, Penelope, Nannie, Mary, John, Margaret, Minerva, and George. ^[5] James died in 1876. The 1880 Cherokee census shows "Deborah" and the five youngest children living in the Flint District. ^[6]

Deborah was enrolled by the Dawes Commission in 1902 ^[7] and applied for a share of the Eastern Cherokee (Guion Miller) payment in 1907. She was rejected since she was an Old Settler. ^[8]

In 1900 Susan was living with her daughter Mary and her husband, ^[9] and in 1910 she was living with daughter Margaret and her husband. ^[10] She died on April 01, 1914 in Adair County, Oklahoma, and is buried at the Stilwell City Cemetery, Adair County, Oklahoma. ^[11]
