Baseball Hall of Famer Johnny Lee Bench was born in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma on December 7, 1947 to Theodore and Kathleen Chaney Bench. [1]
Johnny, a 1965 valedictorian [2] of Binger High School, played both basketball and baseball while growing up and excelled in both sports. He was named All-State in baseball and was drafted by San Diego, a AAA Cincinnati farm team of the Pacific Coast League, in 1965. [3] In 1967, Bench was called up to the big leagues and played his rookie year with the Cincinnati Reds. [4]
Bench, a catcher, played for the Reds for 17 seasons, earning recognition as Rookie of the Year (1968), Most Valuable Player (1970, 1972), Gold Glove Winner (1968, 1969, 1970, 1971, 1972, 1973, 1974, 1975, 1976, 1977), and World Series MVP (1976). With his team, dubbed "The Big Red Machine," he won six division titles, four National League pennants, and two World Series championships (1975, 1976.)
