James Benedict was born a slave about 1830. He is possibly the son of Samuel Benedict, but he might be the grandson. He was emancipated in view of emigrating to Liberia by his owner William Savage, Esq. through the American Colonization Society. It is possible that James lived on Sterling Bluff Plantation, which Savage sold in 1834. Or, Silk Hope Plantation which he took over when his brother died. William Savage emancipated twelve of his slaves to go to Liberia. Included was Samuel Benedict, the only other Benedict on the ship manifest.
