As young man John Bly went to Albuquerque in New Mexico Territory and worked for the Santa Fe railroad during its great western expansion. In 1891 he returned to Ohio due to the death of his mother and decided to remain. He married and settled in the town of Bryan, in Williams County, Ohio and worked as a barber for over 40 years. He added the middle initial "C." to his name after he married.
