Biography

Elizabeth was born about 1819. Her childhood was tumultuous. She was only about 6 when her mother died. Her father remarried in 1828, but the new bride, a widow, could not abide by Cosby's habit of allowing his youngest son to share his bed even after it became her wedding bed and she quickly sued for divorce. When her father moved to Illinois, Elizabeth, yet single, traveled with her father and his party. On 24 Dec 1840, Elizabeth married John E. Vance in McDonough County, Illinois. The Vances moved on to Iowa where Elizabeth died on 1 Nov 1850. Her gravemarker in the Highland Cemetery in Eddyville, Mahaska County, Iowa is inscribed "Elizabeth Vance."
