Biography

Ethel May Britten was born about 1886, her birth registered that year in Horsham, Victoria, the daughter of Joseph Britten and Mary Ellen Hunter. [1]

On 14th June, 1905, at the residence of the groom, Mount Gambier, she married George William Henry Brighton. The marriage was registered in the Grey district, South Australia, with their respective fathers recorded as Joseph Britten and George Brighton. Ethel and George had at least six children. [2] [3]

Ethel Brighton passed away in 7th July, 1919, Broken Hill, New South Wales. Her death was registered Broken Hill with her father's forename indexed as Joseph. [4]

BRIGHTON.—The FRIENDS of Mr. G. W. H. BRIGHTON and FAMILY and Mr. .and Mrs. A. J. BRITTEN and FAMILY are respectfully informed that the remains of their late beloved WIFE, MOTHER, SISTER, SISTER-IN-LAW, and AUNT, (Ethel May) will be removed from his residence, corner Patton and Central streets, South Broken Hill, TO-MORROW (TUESDAY), at 4 o'clock, for interment in the Salvation Army portion of the Methodist Cemetery.

AN UNFORTUNATE FAMILY,
Mrs. Ethel May Brighton, wife of Mr. E. W. H. Brighton [sic], of the corner of Patton and Central streets, South Broken Hill, died in the Hospital this morning following an attack of pneumonic influenza. This family has been extremely unfortunate, and much sympathy is felt for Mr. Brighton. Prior to to-day two children of Mr. Brighton had succumbed to attacks of pneumonic influenza in a few weeks. Three other children are now in the Hospital suffering with the disease. No.80 is a daughter, and she is still seriously ill, though she has been removed from the dangerous list. No. 81 is another daughter, and she is convalescing. The third child, No. 125, is also on the serious list. [6]

FUNERAL
The funeral took place this afternoon of the late Mrs. Ethel May Brighton, wife of Mr. E. W. H. Brighton, who died in the Hospital on Monday morning following an attack of pneumonic influenza. Two children of Mr. and Mrs. Brighton have succumbed to the same complaint, and three others were reported yesterday to be still in the Hospital. The funeral left the residence of Mr. Brighton, at the corner of Patton and Central streets at 4 o'clock this afternoon, and on arrival at the Hillside corner, about 100 members of the Amalgamated Society of Carpenters and Joiners, of which Mr. Brighton is a member, formed up and marched in front of the hearse to the cemetery. The six pall bearers were also members of the society. There was a big attendance at the graveside, where the burial, service was conducted by Captain Davidson, of the South Broken Hill Salvation Army Corps. [7]

Mrs Ethel May Brighton wife of Mr E. W. H. Brighton, of the corner of Patton anal Central streets, South Broken Hill, died from an attack of pneumonic influenza. This family has been extremely unfortunate and much sympathy is felt for Mr Brighton. Quite recently two children of Mr Brighton had succumbed to attacks of pneumonic influenza in a few weeks. Three other children are now suffering with the disease. No. 80 is a daughter and is still seriously ill, though she has been removed from the dangerous list. No 81 is another daughter, and she is convalescing. The third child is also on the 'serious list. The late Mrs Brighton was a sister of Mrs T. Casson, of Ngallo, and formerly resided in Pinnaroo. [8]

Fortunately, the three children still in hospital did recover. The two children who had died were the youngest: Frank, aged 2 years; and Albert, aged about five weeks.
