Biography

Jacob W. Broyles was the son of James and Ellender Broyles of Washington and Greene Counties in Tennessee. He was known as Winter Jacob or Wild Jacob and "was probably more unkind to himself than others. Stories of his escapades continued long after his death." He died of Asiatic cholera around the year 1873. His first wife, cousin Elizabeth Broyles, died in a terrible tragedy, drowning in the Nolachuckey River on Easter Sunday, 19 Apr 1829, with her brother George. Jacob was with them and was able to save their children but not his wife and brother-in-law.[1] Jacob subsequently remarried twice and ended up fathering something like 19 children, among them Louvina and Jesse who were raised in the household of his childless brother Ephraim.

In 1830 and 1840 Jacob is found in the census of Washington County. In later years he is in Greene County.

The name of Jacob's third wife has been confusing. The Greene Co. marriage book[2] gives the bride's name as Margaret Broyles (unplaced) and that is what Keith reports. However, Burgner gives her name as Mariah Reynolds.[3] The census record clearly shows Jacob's wife is named Mariah, not Margaret. The difference seems to be that Burgner looked at the marriage bonds as well as the recorded marriages. In this case Rufus K. Marsh provided security (bond). The marriage records at Ancestry are for the marriages that were returned to court and it seems likely that the clerk made an error when entering the information.

Mariah is found in the 1880 census of Cocke Co., Tennessee, with son Rufus.
