Hi there DeeBee - my name is Aaron. I see you've Ancestry DNA tested. Have any of your male Brunts ever considered being yDNA tested or would consider it?

All the male Brunts that have been yDNA tested (well 12 of them) around the world match me and are from a very rare haplogroup called G-M201+ in partlicular I can prove we all came from Norman France, before that Germanic tribes that survived and fought the Romans and before that via Austria 6000 years ago the Brunt male line was in Anatolia (modern northern Turkey).

I am also descended from the Brunts from Staffordshire from the 1500s. We won't be Autosomal DNA matched as my line left the UK in 1860 and Autosomal tests only really work back to the ealry 1800s. The earliest Brunts arrived with the Normans around 1200. Some settled in Stafordshire others in Northhampshire later too before spreading out. You can email me on [email address removed]

Hi Aaron, thanks for getting in touch. I'm afraid I have no male dna relatives to test as there was only my dad and his brother (he had no children) and my dad died in 2016 . The only help I can think of is that I did have a 3rd cousin on 23&me and it showed his paternal haplogroup as I-M227 and as he had come down through my dads line I'd presume that would be my dads group also, but I don't know much about how it all works tbh. He's gone from 23&me now and from the info he may have been quite an age so..... So sadly I can't be much help, sorry. Kind regards, Dee

Hi DeeBee - thanks for responding! I am sorry to hear of your dad and uncle. Part of the puzzle of genealogy is working out that families with the same surname may come from the same place or may not! Surnames were invented from 1200 AD so people could be taxed better and have changed alot over 800 years!

Eg I have worked out that there are four big branches of Brunt's in the world that came from the UK from pre the 1500s. One of those split alot more times is the branch I am from and the source also of most Brunt's in New Zealand where I am today and most of those in the USA come from too. This branch all the living males yDNA tested so far (2 in the USA, 3 in NZ, 7 in the UK) have been shown to be of the 'G' haplogroup. We also know that this line came from France as there is a yDNA match in Belgium that matches us but is dated to a long time ago.

There is another Brunt branch that came from a Robert 'Bruntisford' from Sommerset from 1570 that later branches got all named Brunt from the 1600s and the fourth branch from a William 'Brontes' b1610 in Warwickshire that led to nearly all the Brunts in Samoa today and a few in New Zealand. If your male cousin is a Brunt and was tested as an "I" it is more likely you are from one of these two branches.

Hope that helps your research.
